Song of the Week #55
Well, well, well. Where have I been, I might hear you ask?
Last you’d heard of us (read: me), I was hours away from walking jovially into Temple of Boom in Leeds to see one of the best up and coming bands in hardcore. Consequently, that went about as well as you might have thought. Ironically enough during the last song of the set (being the last Song of the Week too, no less), I copped a mysterious flying forearm to the face and left the venue that Friday with a broken nose and a lot of pride to swallow.
Since then myself and Alex have separately been to other sides of the world on holiday, been to a couple of weddings, started some new projects involving our dearest (and your favourite) gin brand, but I suppose most importantly, enjoying a break - what little of a ‘break’ was actually involved for either one of us! I suppose instead it was a pause to focus on everything, and unfortunately for me, and presumably fortunately for you good folk, it has meant I skimped out on the usual weekly blog for Sinner’s Gin for an unprecedented 5 weeks. Retrospective apologies.
So, I mentioned on one of the last SOTW’s too, that myself and my nearest and dearest were off to watch Kings of Leon, one of the bands I’d been waiting years to see. How were they? Not particularly pleased to be in Leeds on a Tuesday night let me tell you. You might recall all the way back in Song of the Week #2, I talked about Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats being completely admirable letting their music talking and getting down to business for a small slot at a music festival.
Unfortunately, the same strategy can’t work effectively for a band with multiple UK number 1 hits, playing arenas up and down the country. At some point, you have to engage with the audience who have spent over 50 quid a ticket, otherwise they might feel a little bit short changed. The performance itself was good, but the overall experience unfortunately was average.
So unfortunately Kings of Leon won’t be making any Song of the Week appearances until I’ve forgiven them. Instead I’ll include a song just for general listening to ease us all back into it. Service as normal next week? Sounds good. Here’s Twilight Zone by Golden Earring, that finished off the last episode of Ozark, arguably the best series made since Breaking Bad.
