Song of the Week #49
This Song of the Week is a classic, back to basics, just how it should be. There is no eulogy to be written about, no tribute to past gigs or anything spectacular. Instead, this week is a song that has been spinning non-stop for weeks at Sinner’s Gin HQ. I’ve been doing my own head in with it, so god knows how Alex has coped!
It’s strange actually, we’ve covered a few dead rock stars in the past few weeks. This time, we’re looking at the last great one. By that, I mean the last globally recognised old-school rockstar to have emerged from obscurity. The last of a dying breed; a cigarette-smoking, muscle car-driving son of a bitch that doesn't give a damn. Every musician now tries to be everything to everyone, not wanting to offend anybody, and in my view, that can’t make you a real rockstar - certainly not one that can live up to previous generations throwing TVs out of hotel rooms and doing cocaine by the kilogram. You can look at members of Slipknot and other great acts like the Foo Fighters, but all of those members really rose to fame in the 1990s. In contrast, Josh Homme, musician extraordinaire, was plodding along in the 90s with stone rockers Kyuss and with Queens of the Stone Age, until the release of Songs for the Deaf in mid-2002. From there it all changed, and No One Knows hasn't been off the air of every rock radio station since.
Surprisingly though, I’m keeping QOTSA (one of my favourite bands) in reserve for another day. Instead this week, the song I can’t stop listening to comes from one of Homme’s other side projects - the tongue-in-cheek rockers Eagles of Death Metal that he does with Jesse Hughes. I didn’t realise how often this song has been used in video games and other bits and pieces, but to me it is just unbelievably catchy, and as I’ve already said, I can’t stop listening to it. There’s such a rhythm and a vibe to this one, and it’ll be keeping me company as I head over to Munich for a weekend away.
Wannabe in LA - Enjoy!
