Song of the Week #35
I will be the first person to admit that I slept on Municipal Waste. I know, I’m sorry. I don’t know why I did it, I shouldn’t have.
I think what put me off was a video on the youtube channel Loudwire, where guitarist Ryan Waste ran through his various influences and favourite riffs of all time as is standard interview format style for the channel. As the video progressed, Metallica popped up more and more, and my heart sank with boredom. I will readily admit that I overdid thrash in my teens, if I fired up iTunes on an old laptop I dread to think how many Megadeth songs would reside comfortably in the Top 25 Most Played.
In the middle of a long venture into hardcore in my early 20s, I thought the last thing I want is to start listening to Municipal Waste and hear some 7 minute opus of an intro to a song, throwing me back 10 years to my teen years. It put me off, and truthfully it shouldn’t have (moral of the story, never judge a book by its cover). Many friends of mine were/are big into them and it should have told me better, but I didn’t listen at the time, and consequently started discovering them in early 2021 - again, I’m sorry. Municipal Waste hit hard, and took the best bits of thrash and hardcore, chugged a tonne of beers, and got on with it.
I’ve incorporated them into Song of the Week in case you were sleeping on them too, as dear old Alex has been. The Art of Partying album is fantastic, and I’ve chosen my favourite song from it - Sadistic Magician. Enjoy!
